Day 5 - The Conclusion of this... whatever it is

I overslept again today.  I've overslept at least some every day during my core sleep.  I can not get to sleep during such short nap cycles.  It generally takes me at least 30 mins to fall asleep, even if I'm tired.  So this is it I guess, at least for a while.  I may come back to it later on.  After several discussions with my wife I've decided I have enough on my plate right now.  I am in the midst of preparing for a move to a new Church and new city in June, I'm dieting and exercising regularly and this is just one more stress that I don't need right now.

So there are all of my good excuses.  My rotten excuses - I'm so dang tired!

I really do want to come back at this again later on and hopefully I will.  When I do I'll continue posting here and record how everything goes.

Until then,

May The Lord Bless Thee and Keep Thee,
May The Lord make His face to shine upon Thee, and be gracious unto Thee
May The Lord lift up His countenance before Thee and give Thee peace.

Shalom

Day 4, Wow am I Sleepy!

5:07am   - I'm up.   !!   Maaaaa!!  I'm UP!!!!  Leave me alone!!!

7:30 am Went for a walk after taking the kids to school and that really helped.

11am After my walk I went into the office - feeling good!

1:25pm Been up for a while after my first nap - No Sleep.  Good thing that this is my short wake time and next nap will be coming up soon.

6:42pm - Just got back from Bible study and ate dinner, feeling good even though I didn't sleep again during my nap at 4pm.  I'm starting to think that just laying down and relaxing is pretty good in itself even if I don't fall asleep.  Considering trying Uberman schedule for a day or two though to see if I can get my naps going.  I've decided that tonight I'm going to move my core to 2pm again and reduce it back to 3 hours - going to add the third nap back in tomorrow and try the regular schedule again.

Day 3 - Schedule Change to Modified Everyman 4.5

Well this morning I really lazied it up and slept in until 6:30am.  Sooo - I don't want to give up on Everyman just yet, and I think I'm going to just go with a modified version for the next day or two and see how that works.  I seem to be almost naturally falling into a version of the schedule called  Everyman 4.5 which basically adds one more hour to the total sleep you get.  So I'm planning on adjusting my nap schedule today and eliminating one altogether so that I have two naps during the day and a longer core at night.

Last night I was very foggy, I could feel the effects of sleep deprivation during the evening after I wasn't able to fall asleep during my second and third naps.  I did make one more video last night and I hesitated to even upload it because I was so groggy.  I'm going to include it here in day three to justify my modification a little more.

So, yeah that's a tired dude right there.  This is what my original schedule looked like.

I started out with the top times in day 1 - after finding that I couldn't possibly get to sleep in 20 mins I adjusted to 30 mins which really didn't help much.  The first day I almost got the right core time of 3 hours, day two I overslept and of course as I previously said, I really overslept this morning on day 3.

9:15am - Just got back from a 2.5 mile walk.  Feeling good and awake.

It took me some time to figure out a good modified schedule that would fit in with my regular daily activities but I think I've got it.  I'm eliminating one of the naps.  This will give me 2 power naps in the middle of the day and 4 hours core sleep for a total of 5 hours.

It may also be worth noting here that I am currently 32 days into a diet.  I've also started walking 4-6 times a week.  Currently I'm walking 2.5 miles a day and I've lost 19 pounds in the last month or so.  This I'm sure is affecting me somewhat.  So anyway - Day 3, hopefully I'll be able to nap more effectively today and I'll be able to get used to this schedule as a lead in for going back toward the standard Everyman schedule.

1:10pm - Just got up from first nap of the day - I think I actually slept this time for a little while.  I feel good and refreshed!

4:35pm.  Second nap down and not sure if I actually slept or not.  Feeling ok - we will see how this last big awake works out.

11:35pm - I'm holding out on the long stretch to my core sleep cycle but I'm pretty tired.  I have a headache, I just took some Ibuprofen.   Less than an hour and a half to go for day 3.  Oh yeah, I heard Dr. Oz say something a couple days ago about using a spray bottle with water and rosemary misted into your face to give you an energy boost.  Trying it, and I guess it does kinda wake you up a little - I think it is just the water being misted in your face though.  But he was using fresh rosemary - all we had was some dried stuff in the herb rack.  Maybe fresh works better?

Day 2

I hit the snooze again, even worse today.  I got up at about 5:50am so I added almost an hour to my core sleep making it nearly 4 hours.

Slept on too many pillows and neck is hurting...

6:05am - Groggy, aches...  Took Ibuprofen

7:30am - Feeling better - got the kids off to school, the Ibuprofen helped my neck soreness and I feel pretty good.  I'm still a little groggy but no more than any normal morning.

I just took my 12:30-1pm nap.  Didn't sleep, got close but no cigar.  Going to have to just hold out till next one and see how that goes.

5:43 - Just got up from my 5pm nap.  I listened to a guided meditation sleep track.  I don't think I went to sleep, but I might have just a little just toward the end.  I guess that's an improvement.

10:32pm  I've been up from my last nap for 30 mins.  Again I didn't fall asleep.  I just read an article that said you don't have to actually sleep for a nap to be effective.  So maybe just relaxing and resting is at least helping some.  I am tired.  The last phase was pretty tough.  I am going to keep trying though - I feel certain I'll sleep during my core time.

Day 1 Last Cycle

Well its been an interesting first day.

My 12:30 nap felt more like a resting period, although I may have drifted off briefly before the alarm.  I got up after my first nap and a friend called who wanted to go fishing.  I knew that would throw my scheduled 5pm sleep off - I moved it to later.  About 2pm I went to my room and started watching TV on the bed.  Sometime around 2:15 I fell asleep and got up at an hour later.

My buddy caught the biggest fish...

My last nap was at 10pm, again I lay down for about 30 mins but I am pretty sure I didn't sleep at all.  I did get very relaxed but never fell asleep.

It's now 11:30pm and I plan on staying up till my next scheduled cycle which will start day 2 for me at 2am.

The Everyman Sleep Cycle

So I am starting an experiment. I'm going to try a polyphasic sleep cycle. The one I'm going to try is called the Everyman cycle.
This consist of one long sleep of no more than 3 hours, followed by three nap times of 20 mins each during the day. I've decided to start this on a Saturday night/ Sunday morning which is probably not the best idea; I may have to alter things around. But I think I have a decent scheduled worked out, I will only be sleeping 4 hours a day on this schedule. I have been sleeping about 6-7 the last week or two. I hope this works! Will report back again soon.My first core cycle was from 2-5am. I went to bed between 1:30-2am Not sure how long it took me to go to sleep but not too long I think. I had a little trouble getting up with the alarm at 5:am so I hit snooze a couple times and actually got up at about 5:30am - 5:36am - Awoke after hitting snooze a couple of times @ 5:30am
6:30 Shower
7am Breakfast = Slim Fast

1pm - Just finished my first Nap of 20 mins - I actually used a 30 min timer to give myself a little extra time to fall asleep.   I don't think I actually slept, but I rested well - I got up on the timer and feel fine.

Ate a light lunch and just got a call from a friend who wants to go fishing.   This will interfere with my planned second nap but I'll just adjust it to later and move forward.
